North Shore Junction is an inclusive community of diverse people with lived/living experience of substance use and recovery that offers substance use recovery services to adults 19+ on the North Shore. We support all pathways of recovery and each person’s self-defined recovery goals; abstinence is not a requirement for participation. Services are free and include a variety of groups, activities & one-on-one supports in-person or online. As a Peer Support Worker, you will play a crucial role in helping people in recovery build connections, resiliency, and wellness through the Junction!
JOB SUMMARY:
The purpose of this position is to engage and support Junction participants, both on site at North Shore Junction and in community. The Peer Support Worker will be the main point of contact for participants who come to the Junction, and will create a welcoming environment and impression by connecting 1:1, maintaining a tidy space, and facilitating programming. The Peer Support Worker contributes alongside staff to the good operation of the Junction. They provide input and feedback regarding future programming decisions, speak up on behalf of “guest voice”, and contribute to team tasks and plans.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Plan, prepare, and deliver programming in collaboration with peer support worker team, Junction staff, and participants
- Encourage safe and respectful participation in groups and activities
- Provide 1:1 peer support to Junction participants
- Complete documentation as required, including incident reports and progress notes
- Assist with set up, clean up, and daily operations of the program alongside Junction staff
- Attend trainings, regular supervision, and other team meetings as required
- Follow guidelines and procedures as laid out by Lookout Housing + Health Society Policies and North Shore Junction operational guides.
- Assist in and attend peer education, such as peer support orientation and training
- Share personal experience appropriately for the benefit of the participants
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Have personal lived/living experience with substance use recovery
- Have personal experience receiving services within the substance use system
- Have completed a Peer Support Training Program and/or equivalent education and experience
- Have demonstrated experience with facilitation and leading groups
- Be familiar with and comfortable using Zoom, Microsoft 365, and mobile apps
- Have excellent listening and communication skills
- Be able to attend shifts consistently and be highly reliable to commitments
- Have a successful completion of a Criminal Record Check (organized and paid by Lookout)
- Be able to role model recovery by sharing common life experiences and practical information
- Have effective strategies for maintaining wellness, recovery, and dealing with stress
- Be able to work respectfully with a culturally diverse population
- Be willing to respect other people’s right to decline assistance
- Be open and willing to support a wide range of recovery pathways
- Be able to present in a professional manner
- Be empathetic, patient, and supportive
